I don't know about you, but I've always had a problem with my traffic when playing Paradox Interactive's Cities: Skylines. Thankfully, in the Mass Transit DLC and patch, Finnish developers Colossal Order have alleviated some of that stress by introducing two new traffic-calming measures that you can use to your advantage.

In this guide, I'll go over some of the options that you have at your disposal for controlling traffic flow, and how you can use them to keep transit running smoothly in your city.

Cities: Skylines Traffic Manager: President Edition - CitiesSkylinesMods/TMPE. Sep 20, 2017 Traffic Manager: President Edition helps you manage your city’s traffic. This mod allows you to toggle traffic lights at junctions, add yield and stop signs to junctions, define timed traffic lights that can adapt. How to Keep Traffic Flowing with the Cities: Skylines Mass Transit DLC

Use Stop Signs to Your Advantage

Stop signs are a major addition in the Mass Transit DLC. You can now have either stop signs or traffic lights at intersections, rather than it just being a free-for-all.

To add a stop sign to an intersection, you open the Info View tab and then select the bottom left Traffic Routes icon. Click on the Junctions tab, and you will see grayed-out stop signs and traffic light icons appear on all your junctions.

When changing who has the right of way or traffic light settings, the effect is instant. So it's a good idea to fiddle around with different traffic flow patterns to see which one will really work best with your city before you let your citizens drive amok.

Choosing who has right of way can make traffic moves smoother on your roads.

If you want to change all the stop signs along a stretch of road, you can click on the road name and turn it into a priority road. Once you do, all roads joining that priority road will immediately have stop signs at the junction. This can be a huge time-saver for those areas where you simply need controlled traffic at every intersection.

Study Traffic Routes to Optimize Your Flow

Another interesting traffic measure added in the Mass Transit DLC is the ability to look at various traffic routes -- whether for a specific type of transportation, or even for a single vehicle.

To view these routs, open your info view and lick over to the Traffic Routes menu. From there, you can choose which kind of traffic you want to look at. In the image below, I've chosen to look at private cars, and narrowed it down to one car in particular so I can see its specific route -- and keep track of when the road is clear and when he runs into a traffic jam.

Using traffic routes you can see where needs traffic calming measures

Looking at traffic routes for a number of different vehicle types will help you see where the problem areas are in your transit flow. This view will help you pinpoint areas where traffic becomes congested, so that you can implement some calming measures like stop lights or stop signs in order to smooth things out and make them run more efficiently.

This new traffic route view can also be useful when planning a bus route, because it's a good idea to create a route that avoids high-traffic areas that are prone to congestion.

No matter what changes you implement, you'll always want to come back to this screen and make sure they're functioning the way you want them to. This mode will help you see problem areas or spot a change that isn't working quite as intended, so that you can quickly fix it up and get your city's roads cleared right up.

That's all I've got for this guide! But there have been a number of new additions to the transport system in Cities: Skylines, so make sure you check back to GameSkinny to find out how these work!

Introduction

Most parts of Traffic Manager: President Edition are configurable. Note that all mod settings except the options in the first General section are saved separately for each savegame. To configure the mod, please first start/load a game, then press Escape (or click the 'gear' icon in the upper right corner), click on Options and select Traffic Manager: President Edition on the left side. When accessing the mod options dialog via the game's main menu, settings are not saved and a message box will appear.

General

This tab contains general mod settings which affect both core functionality and performance.

General options tab

Language

The language dropdown contains languages that are not officially supported by the game.

Lock main menu (button) position

These two options control if the main menu button and main menu itself can be moved around. Tick the checkboxes in order to fixate the respective element to its current screen location.

Compact main menu

When enabled small buttons are displayed within the main menu.

Window transparency

Move the slider to adjust the transparency of all windows.

Overlay transparency

Move the slider to adjust the transparency of all overlays (e.g. priority signs, timed traffic lights, speed limits, etc.)

Enable tutorial messages

Enable this option to activate explainatory messages for all mod functions.

Show error message if a mod incompatibility is detected

Mods collide whenever they override the same part of the base game. Enable this option to make TMPE show an error message when such a mod incompatibility is detected. Despite having the option enabled or disabled, compatibility information is logged into the file TMPE.log. However, due to technical reasons TMPE is not able to identify the name of the conflicting mod.

Simulation accuracy

Toyota k can commander download. When simulating vehicle behavior atjunctions with priority signs or timed traffic lights generally not all vehicles are considered during the calculations (due to the desired limitation of required computing power). Selecting one of the provided accuracy levels lets you control how many computational resources are invested in calculating those type of junctions.

Customizations come into effect instantaneously

If enabled, changes to

  • lane arrows,
  • lane connections,
  • vehicle restrictions, and
  • junction restrictions

come into effect immediately. Note that this may lead to performance degradation on weaker systems: When the option is activated all paths that traverse the modified (road) segment have to be recalculated.

Gameplay

This tab contains gameplay related settings that affect overall game difficulty and simulation realism.

Gameplay options tab

Reckless driving

Some cims do not like sticking to the rules. Reckless driving introduces multiple kinds of traffic rule violations.

Realistic speeds

If this option is enabled, actual speed varies from car to car. In the base game, vehicles always drive as fast as speed limits, road condition and the car itself allow.

Further reading: Realistic speeds

Road condition has a bigger impact on vehicle speed (Snowfall DLC required)

In the base game, repairing roads with maintenance trucks only raises the maximum vehicle speed. With this option enabled, vehicles drive slower on unmaintained roads.

Disable despawning

See Toggle despawn.

Advanced Vehicle AI

Traffic Manager: President Edition is equipped with a modified path-finding algorithm: The Advanced Vehicle AI improves overall traffic in multiple aspects.

  • Vehicles choose their routes based on the current traffic situation.
  • Overall lane usage is improved.

Parking AI

You may have noticed that cims sometimes spawn a car at their current position or that cars suddenly disappear (especially noticeable at public transport stations). This (mis)behavior is also known as 'using pocket cars'. The reason is that cims do not care much about parking spaces. If a free parking space lies in the close vicinity where cims want to get rid of their car everything is fine. But the base game does not come anywhere near real-life behavior when talking about parking and returning to/using a parked vehicle. This is the point where the Parking AI comes into play.

Instead of having a ready-to-use car in their pockets, after enabling the checkbox Enable more realistic parking cims ordinarily try to park their car before reaching their target (up to 10 times, then they give up). If cims decide to use their car to go somewhere they also first walk to their parked car, enter it and then continue their journey (In the base game they would only enter their car if it coincidentally lied along their designated route).

Prevent unnecessary transfers at public transport stations

When enabled, additional path-finding costs are applied whenever a cim switches from one to another public transport line. Costs depend on the time that cims are expected to wait for the next public transport vehicle to arrive. The result is a linear interpolation between both configuration variables PublicTransportTransitionMinPenalty and PublicTransportTransitionMaxPenalty.

Policies & Restrictions

This tab contains options to control certain behaviors.

Policies & Restrictions options tab

Busses may ignore lane arrows

Normally, each vehicle has to obey your lane arrows. For public transport busses this may pose a problem: If bus stops and junctions are close together, busses might not get the opportunity to change lanes after leaving the bus stop in order to turn left or right (depending on your traffic system). This results in the layout of needlessly complex transport lines with busses being forced to take round trips instead of direct turns.

This feature allows busses to ignore lane arrows in order to prevent the creation of unnecessary detours.

Vehicles may enter blocked junctions

Enabling this feature globally enables vehicles to enter junctions even if the following road segment is occupied.

See Full List On Github.com

The setting that you define in the option dialog may be overridden for individual junctions. See Junction restrictions for more information.

Vehicles may do u-turns at junctions

If enabled, you allow vehicles to turn around at junctions.

Vehicles may turn at red traffic lights

If enabled, you allow vehicles to turn right/left (depending on your traffic system) at red traffic lights.

Also apply to left & right turns between one-way streets

This option allows vehicles to also perform farside turns from one one-way into another, even if the traffic light shows red.

Vehicles going straight on may change lanes at junctions

If enabled, you allow vehicles driving straight on at a junction to change their lane during the maneuver.

The setting that you define in the option dialog may be overridden for individual junctions. See Junction restrictions for more information.

Vehicles follow priority rules at junctions with timed traffic lights

If enabled, vehicles approaching a junction that is controlled by a timed traffic light follow a general set of priority rules. This can be used to make vehicles yield on unprotected turning lights.

Ban private cars and trucks on bus lanes

If enabled, artificial vehicle restrictions are created for all bus lanes such that passenger cars and delivery trucks are banned on them.

Enable highway specific lane merging/splitting rules

When exiting/entering a highway vehicles switch to/come from a designated lane in real-life. These so called deceleration/acceleration lanes are needed in order to maintain a steady traffic flow on the highway and to ensure safety. In real-life there are rules how highway lanes are merged or splitted. TM:PE implements these rules for all highway roads and restricts the set of allowed lane changes on highways if you enable highway specific lane merging/splitting rules.

Heavy trucks prefer outer lanes on highways

Enable this option to instruct heavy vehicles to use the outermost lane on highways where possible.

Further reading: Heavy trucks prefer outer lanes on highways

Evacuation busses may ignore traffic rules (Natural Disasters DLC required)

If enabled, evacuation busses behave like emergency vehicles/reckless drivers: They ignore priority signs, traffic lights and drive faster than allowed.

Use the available checkboxes to enable or disable individual mod features. Disabling a feature may have a positive effect on system performance. Disabling a feature does remove any changes that were carried out with it (e.g. existing timed traffic lights, priority signs, etc. are stored even if these features are disabled).

Reset stuck cims and vehicles

If a vehicle gets stuck and you do not want to use the Clear traffic button or a cim does not move anymore you can use this button to remove them from the game.

Show Pathfinding Stats

Presidential Traffic Manager Cities Skylines

If you enable this option, a new label is added to the game menu (the one shown when you press Esc in-game, or click the gear button in top-right corner of screen) that indicates the number of Path Finders ('PFs') currently queued.

If the number is very large, something that can happen on large systems or slow computers, it's possible that some vehicles may appear 'stuck' while they wait for their path.
